We are Crown

On a mission to help the world reach zero carbon through sustainable and affordable smart glass technology.

Improve

The energy efficiency of windows

After nearly two decades commercializing intellectual property, working with over 20,000 patents, Doug Croxall came across electrokinetic technology that had been earmarked to be divested by Hewlett-Packard. He felt so strongly that he acquired the technology and left his job as the chairman and CEO of a publicly-traded company to lead the newly-formed venture, Crown Electrokinetics.

The original technology developed at HP was designed to control the light passing through plastic with electronically charged ink, similar to what is used in Amazon’s Kindle.

The Crown team saw a much larger opportunity for it in the emerging smart glass industry. Crown created a pigment-based film, DynamicTint™, that when applied to a glass surface could allow it to transition from clear and dark in seconds. Because the technology is embedded in a thin film, rather than actual glass, it can be applied to any existing glass surface.

Armed with this technology, Crown set out with a lofty goal to retrofit and upgrade existing windows within the built environment.

Reduce operating costs AND carbon emissions

Our Vision

To help decarbonize buildings, we took our DynamicTint™ technology and combined it with window inserts, to create the world’s first Smart Window Insert powered by DynamicTint™. It is a fully self-contained unit, making installation easy and does not require hardwiring into your electrical grid because it is solar and battery powered. The window insert adds another layer of insulation to your windows, reducing the amount of heat loss. Installing Smart Window Inserts will help building owners reduce their energy consumption, operating costs and carbon emissions.
